Core biopsy is a minimally invasive procedure allowing sampling of the breast tissue, therefore avoiding surgical biopsy. Ultrasound guided core biopsy is performed on lesions seen on breast ultrasound. This procedure is performed while the patient is lying on an examination table on their back. Ultrasound core biopsies are very accurate as the biopsy needle is placed in the center of the lesion before sampling begins and can sometimes allow complete excision of a small lesion with visual guidance. The patient leaves the procedure with a band aid over a small paper cut size incision and often returns to daily activity by the next day. Studies have been performed to show the results of core biopsy are as accurate as surgical biopsy.
